Position: Tack Welder

Reports To: Welding Supervisor

Job Summary

For the welding operations in the plant:  Welds with all processes on all types of materials and products fabricated by the company.  Interprets blue prints and procedures, fits parts and performs quality welds.  Cooperates and works with other operators on the Welding operations as required by the Supervisor.

Responsible for completing mechanical tacking operations and manual tacking functions.

Essential Job Functions

  • MIG/TIG welding
  • Operates welding equipment and torches.
  • Follows correct procedures for the welding processes.
  •  Verifies that a quality weld process has occurred with each welding; i.e. that weld seams meet specification standards. 
  • Sets up, maintains and adjusts welding equipment. 
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment used in the welding process; including the Automatic Tacking Fixture.
  • Provides instructions to others as necessary to complete the assigned welding processes.
  • Operates a forklift to move products, materials and parts.
  • Operates the Automatic Tacking Fixture.
  • Positions product with clamps and hammering as necessary.
  • As production schedule demands:  Switch from stainless steel to carbon steel or aluminum.
  • Depending on the Tacking Work Station assigned: 

a.  Receives the product from the roller line, maneuvers it into the Automatic Tacking Fixture or laydown fixture, and adjusts the position of the product to complete the assigned welding process.

b.  Positions and maneuvers the product, parts and equipment in the welding process manually and / or using a hoist (or strong arm) as necessary to complete the assigned welding process.

c.  Positions a ladder and box to get in and out of the product in order to do welding inside the product.

  • Handles parts, materials, equipment and tools used in the welding process.
  • Completes the required records, i.e. ISO data and Labor Time Sheets.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Ability to read and understand directions, blue prints, ISO procedures and description sheets.
  • Ability to complete Labor Time Sheets, and to accumulate / record data in compliance with the ISO procedures; i.e. record clock number on tank.
  • Ability to clearly communicate with all other operators.
  • Ability to add and subtract; and multiply and divide.
  • Ability to measure distances using a tape measure.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 75 lbs.
  • Forklift Operator Certification.

Work Relationships

  • Reports directly to the Welding Department Production Supervisor.
  • Communicates with all other Welding operators and personnel throughout the Plant.
  • All classifications of welders train and assist other welders and operators in the Welding Department as assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Communicate and cooperate with outside vendors as required.
